From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A NEW ZEALANDER has been appointed as the new Head Master of Eton College. John Lewis, 51, currently headmaster of Geelong Grammar School in Australia, will succeed Dr Eric Anderson in September 1994.

The appointment was officially announced yesterday, after months of speculation about who would take over from Dr Anderson on his retirement. His job, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious school posts in England, was advertised last summer. Among those tipped to take over was the current Minister of Public Service and Science, William Waldegrave.

The new incumbent is currently the headmaster of a school which was once attended by Prince Charles and Rupert Murdoch.

Mr Lewis holds a double first in classics from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and taught at Eton between 1971 and 1980. He was known as a distinguished rugby player and cricketer, and during his previous period at Eton he spurred his charges on to win sporting trophies.
