Major libel case 'in court soon'
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.JOHN MAJOR'S libel complaint against the New Statesman could come before a jury as early as June, it emerged yesterday.
The trial of the left-wing weekly and Scallywag, a satirical monthly, would take place in the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court. The claims by the Prime Minister and Clare Latimer, the caterer named in the magazines, are uncomplicated compared to many actions. The upshot turns on whether the material was libellous when taken as a whole, and the interim stages could be completed within three months.
Mr Major's lawyers have made it clear that he intends to go into the witness box.
The New Statesman said yesterday that it was pleased with the response to appeals for funds to fight the action. Pat Coyne, managing editor, said a 'good deal' of money had come in. A fund-raising campaign will be launched on Thursday next week.
