Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A SENIOR policeman who allegedly called women delegates at a conference on domestic violence a 'bunch of lezzies' has been reinstated to the force after intervention by the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Paul Condon, writes Tim Kelsey.

The Commissioner said an investigation had not proved beyond doubt that Chief Superintendent Neil Spencer- Knott had been responsible for making the remark.

Ch Supt Spencer-Knott was told to resign immediately from his pounds 40,000 job at West Hendon, north-west London, after a two-day disciplinary hearing in December.

Mr Condon heard the officer's appeal yesterday, and despite ordering his reinstatement, told the tribunal that if he had found that the officer had made such a comment he would have considered it 'unacceptable'.

Mr Spencer-Knott, 49, was said to have made the remark at a conference in March last year at the police training centre at Hendon. He was alleged to have commented to reporter Camillor Fracassini, of the Hendon Times: 'They are all a bunch of lezzies. There is not a normal one among them.'

Mr Fracassini said at the time of the disciplinary hearing that he had mentioned it to conference officials, one of whom made a formal complaint.

Scotland Yard was discussing where the officer would be posted.
