Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

One of two teenage students accused of murdering an Egyptian chef denied yesterday at the Old Bailey that he enjoyed killing, writes Mary Braid.

Jamie Petrolini, 19, could not explain why, after the killing, he put on the dead man's glasses and spat fake blood on to the table of a burger bar.

Under cross-examination, Petrolini insisted that he had stabbed Mohammed el-Sayed to death because he believed it was an SAS initiation test and that Richard Elsey, 19, his co- accused, was an SAS officer. He denied that he took the lead in the killing and said he was following Elsey's orders.

Petrolini, of Grantown-on- Spey, Highland, and Elsey, of Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, both deny murdering Mr el-Sayed in London on January 14 this year. The prosecution alleges that they jumped into Mr el-Sayed's car when it stopped at a junction in Bayswater, west London, and that Petrolini slashed the man's throat and stabbed him to death while Elsey held him from behind.

Petrolini has admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The trial continues today.
