A human skull was discovered on Monday in an abandoned hotel in Bolton, UK, the police confirmed, after they were informed of the find by a couple investigating paranormal activities.

The Greater Manchester police cordoned off the area near Blackburn Road in Egerton, Bolton, where the skull was found.

The detectives assured the residents, who were “shocked” with the discovery, that it poses no threat to public and not yet linked to any ongoing investigation.

"This was a very surprising discovery made in the early hours of Monday morning and we have been working ever since to establish the circumstances," detective inspector Debbie Hurst said.

Tests and forensic analysis would be conducted to ascertain the age of the skull and circumstances under which the person died.

A couple, Danny and Felicity Duffy, who runs a Youtube channel, found the skull when they were filming in the area and alerted the police, reported Manchester Evening News.

“We were doing our normal routine and about 10 or 15 minutes in we spotted something,” Mr Duffy said. “There was a jacket on the floor. Then I saw what looked like a pebble on the floor.”

“I moved the bushes to the side and it was a human skull in the tree line. It really did give us a shock,” he added.

The couple said they have been unable to sleep at night and woken up by bad dreams.

“I’ve not slept,” Danny said. “I can’t get it out of my mind. I’ve never come across anything like that before,” he said.

The couple was interrogated by police for two hours before being let go.

Detective Hurst said that they understand some concern in the community due to the nature of this discovery and “the sheer intrigue this investigation brings with it”.

"However we are confident there is no threat to the public and that this isn’t currently linked to any other ongoing investigations," she said urging people to contact police if they have information about the case.
