Police said the woman, reportedly in her 20s, was “treated for life-threatening injuries” at the time by doctors and paramedics who arrived at the scene by air-ambulance. She was treated for around 30 minutes before being driven in an ambulance to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
The woman’s injuries are no longer life-threatening, the BBC reports, while a spokesperson for the Met police said the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
Martin Peaple, 26, a retail worker, told the London Evening Standard there was around a thousand people stood watching while the helicopter circled and landed in Trafalgar Square, with many “asking if it was a show”.
The Met said in a statement: “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service shortly before 19:30 hours with reports of a woman having fallen from one of the lion statues in London’s Trafalgar Square.
“An air ambulance landed in Trafalgar square and took the woman to hospital suffering with head injuries. At this early stage the incident is not believed to be suspicious.”
