From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A woman has died in south London after four vehicles hit her as she was crossing a road — none of the drivers stopped.

The victim, who is believed to be in her late 20s or early 30s, was hit by a lorry early on Monday morning while walking on a pedestrian crossing in Tulse Hill.

The Metropolitan Police say the woman was then struck by another lorry and two cars and “none of these drivers stopped”.

Paramedics treated her at the scene on Norwood Road, but she was pronounced dead at 7.21am.

Formal identification is yet to take place, but police say her next of kin have been been informed.

Alastair Middleton, Acting Detective Sergeant, said: "I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision and the moments afterwards to contact us. I would also urge the drivers of all four vehicles to come forward and speak with my team."

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating and a post-mortem has yet to be conducted.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Merton on 020 8543 5157 or via @MetCC on Twitter.
