From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

An elderly woman pedestrian who was struck by a mobility scooter has died, police said today.

Lillian Macey, 90, of Harlow, Essex, died at Salisbury Hospital, where she was being treated for leg injuries after the incident in Sandown on the Isle of Wight on Tuesday.

Mrs Macey had just crossed Sandown High Street on a zebra crossing when the collision with the scooter happened on the pavement.

The scooter driver, a 76-year-old man, is being interviewed by police but has not been arrested.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police initially said the dead woman had been the victim of a hit-and-run but today said this was not the case.

Mrs Macey was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Newport, but was later transferred to Salisbury, where she died the following day.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out by a Home Office pathologist.

Acting Inspector Paul Bailey said: "We need to hear from any witnesses who saw the collision or who saw the blue scooter being driven prior to the collision.

"It is important to reach any witnesses who may have been holidaying on the Isle of Wight and have returned to their homes."
