(Devon and Cornwall Police/PA Wire)

An elderly woman was rescued from her car after she crashed through a garage and into a river, police said today.

Pictures taken by emergency services show the precarious position the woman found herself in, when her blue Vauxhall Corsa smashed through the garage wall, in Chillaton, Devon, yesterday afternoon.

The woman, believed to be in her 70s, had managed to get out of her car following the three-metre plunge, and was discovered by officers in the water, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

It is understood she mistakenly hit the accelerator sending her hurtling towards the rear wall of the garage.

The woman was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, to be treated for the effects of cold and leg injuries. Her condition is described as stable.

Local diversions were put in place at the scene for two hours, police said.
