Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A van driver who swerved to avoid footballer Clark Carlisle's suicide attempt and consoled the lorry driver who hit him, has died aged 24.
Chris Kilbride was driving on the A64 near York when the former Burnley footballer stepped in front of an oncoming lorry in 2014.
The father-of-two from Leeds jumped from his car to console the goods vehicle driver and attend to Carlisle after calling 999.
The Sun reports that coroners in Leeds confirmed Mr Kilbride died on Thursday, but have not given any further details.
His father, also Chris, confirmed the death of his son on Facebook, and said: "It is with deep regret and a broken heart that I have to inform my friends that my son Chris Kilbride passed away yesterday.
"Thank you to all the people that have already passed on their thoughts. Rest in peace son, I’m already missing you like crazy... You will never leave my thoughts."
