Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A retired DJ has become a local tourist attraction after painting his £40k Porsche bright blue and yellow - to support Ukraine.

Geoff Dunn, 66, says visitors to Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorks., regularly stop him for photos.

He makes sure he’s kitted out in matching blue and yellow clothes for the snaps - and even has themed Crocs.

Geoff, a former entertainer, says he loved the colour scheme before the Russian invasion of Ukraine last February.

But the war gave him reason to wear the clothes daily - and give his prized Boxster a makeover.

Geoff said: “Even before war started, I’ve always dressed in blue and yellow - I’ve always had a love for that colour scheme.

“I’m just someone who’s always having fun and I’m never down. I love being centre of attention in a crowd.”

Geoff, who is single, spent £2.5k on getting his car transformed.

He had it sprayed, bought new alloys and put 20 Ukraine stickers all over the exterior.

He also purchased yellow seat covers and put yellow accents on the handbrake and gearstick to keep the theme going inside.

Geoff now describes the car - which he bought in 2005 - as a “head-turner”.

He said: “I could never sell the car especially now it’s all done up, it’s like a little baby to me.

“It’s a head-turner. Even when I go to Whitby or York, people queue up to take pictures.

“I live in a holiday resort so we’re always busy with tourists.

“I have a lot of Ukrainians and tourists passing by and taking pictures every five minutes.

“I’ve more or less modified the car myself with the flags and logos – they’re on the bonnet, spoiler, boot.

“There’s probably about 20 and a big Ukraine flag at back too.

“I clean and polish it every other day, people stop me when I am and say they love the colour scheme and the support for Ukraine.

“Even if I’m out for a nice meal I’m in blue and yellow.

“I’ve got a Ukraine flag pin on my lapel and I’ve got blue and yellow Crocs with Ukraine Croc charms.

“I just love life you know - I’ve always had fun and laughed always been happy and fun-loving guy.”
