Thousands of people were left without power overnight, and the Met Office warned of the risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces.
The southbound carriageway on the M1 was closed after a lorry crashed near Lutterworth, while another jack-knifed on the M5 near Gloucestershire in heavy snow.

Birmingham Airport warned passengers flights could be affected by snow while Stansted Airport warned passengers that delays and cancellations were likely to continue as a result of the weather.
The Met Office issued a yellow warning for ice across Northern Ireland, large parts of Scotland and the north-east coast of England.
A yellow warning over snow and rain was also triggered for the Midlands, London and the South East, the North West, South West and Yorkshire and the Humber. It will remain in place until 11am on Wednesday.

Bristol airport: some two-hour-plus delays and a cancelled easyJet rotation to Edinburgh.
Edinburgh airport: flights to/from the London area two-three hours late, or cancelled (eg British Airways from Heathrow, easyJet from Luton).
Birmingham airport: open and running with a few delays (though last night’s Ryanair flight from Dublin was diverted to Manchester).
Manchester airport: some two-hour-plus delays.
Ryanair has cancelled more than 30 flights to and from its main base, Stansted, with delays of up to five hours on services that are operating.
PC Chris Gray, a road safety officer, has more information on the backlog on the A14 in Cambridgeshire.
The A46 is currently closed on the southbound carriageway near Upper Broughton due to flooding, Highways England reports.
At least 8,000 homes are still without power, energy provider Western Power Distribution said, as the extreme weather continues to cause problems. The company said its engineers had restored power to over 24,000 since Boxing Day morning.
An ice warning from the Met Office for this evening and overnight across the north-west.
A vehicle fire on the M1 has caused yet another bout of disruption on the motorway, this time northbound between J28 and J29. Two lanes have been closed causing tailbacks.
Highways England are reporting half hour delays on the M1 between J28 and J29 after the car fire.
The A46 is now closed southbound near Upper Broughton due to flooding.
