There is, however, still a chance of flooding in parts of England and Wales until Wednesday, after recent rainfall on already saturated ground.
Of the 25 flood warnings still in force for England on Tuesday morning, most are located in Yorkshire, according to the Environment Agency.
Aidan McGivern, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said that the weather will be better this week, following the heavy downpours and strong winds brought to the UK by Storm Aiden over the weekend.
“Following a very soggy weekend in places, you might be pleased to learn that the weather settles down. It turns much drier — we’ll have sunny days in many places by mid-week," he said.
Although it will be cold, grey and wet for swathes of central and southern England on Tuesday morning, conditions will brighten and the rain will clear by the afternoon. Temperatures, however, will not rise about 11C.
Later in the day, scattered showers will be confined to northern and western Britain, areas which will also see rainfall overnight.
The picture for Wednesday is generally sunnier, especially in the afternoon, when it will be “very pleasant” in many places, according to Mr McGivern.
High pressure will then build up in the UK on Thursday and Friday, preventing heavy rainfall. The broad outlook will be of frosty and foggy nights, followed by sunny days.
“Especially across southern and central parts of the UK we will see frosty and foggy nights later this week. We’ll see sunny days once any fog has cleared,” Mr McGivern said.
