Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A legal bid by a group of travellers to stay on green belt land was today rejected by a High Court judge.
The families moved onto a field off Eaves Green Lane in Meriden, West Midlands, in May 2010, but were refused retrospective planning permission by Solihull Borough Council.
The local authority's decision was backed by Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles last October, leading the travellers to take their battle to the High Court in Birmingham.
Their appeal against the planning permission ruling was dismissed by judge Robert Owen QC this afternoon.
Solihull Borough Council will now apply to the same judge for an injunction to remove the travellers from the site.
The presence of the traveller camp in the village, near Solihull, led residents to form a pressure group named Residents Against Inappropriate Development (RAID). Members of the group maintain a 24-hour vigil opposite the field to monitor the travellers and block the delivery of building materials to the plot.
