From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A 19-month-old boy has died after falling into a lake at a caravan park while on holiday with his parents.

The toddler, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead after being taken to Boston's Pilgrim Hospital from Ingoldmells, near Skegness, at about 5.40pm on Saturday.

The death of the youngster, whose parents were staying at the Water Leisure caravan park in Walls Lane, is not being treated as suspicious.

Commenting on the circumstances of the death, Sergeant Andy Hickinbottom, who is based at Skegness police station, said: "It appears to be a terrible and tragic accident.

"The little boy wandered from his parents for a matter of minutes and was missing for a very short time before being found in the water. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family."

The boy, whose parents are from Peterborough, has not been identified by Lincolnshire Police, which said an inquest was expected to be opened and adjourned tomorrow afternoon.
