A man in his 50s and a woman and a man in their 20s all lost their lives in the single-car accident, South Wales Police said.
The accident happened at 11pm yesterday on the westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 32 and 33 north west of Cardiff.
A single red Peugeot 406 was involved.
The man in his 50s and the woman in her 20s appear to have died at the scene.
A man in his 20s was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in a critical condition and died soon after.
A woman in her 50s and the baby both had less serious injuries but were detained at the hospital.
All five people involved were from the Porthcawl area.
The coroner has been informed and liaison officers are supporting the next of kin.
A police spokesman said: "Any witnesses to the collision or who saw the Peugeot vehicle beforehand are asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
"In particular, police wish to speak urgently to a couple who are believed to have stopped momentarily after the collision."
