Police have ruled out a terrorist attack as the cause of yesterday's Hatfield train crash that killed four passengers and injured more than 30 people.
Fears were raised that the tragedy could have been caused by a bomb after it was revealed that a bomb threat had been made against the stretch of track on Sunday.
Paul Acres, Chief Constable of Hertfordshire police, said: "Early indications from witnesses were that they had heard an explosion, which we now believe was the sound of the impact and there were two calls at the weekend suggesting bombs may have been placed on the line.
"The wreckage has been extensively searched by the anti-terrorist branch of New Scotland Yard together with explosive ordnance disposal experts and we are now satisfied there was no explosion."
Investigators will now concentrate on trying to find if the accident ewas the result of some kindof fault on the line or a mechanical failure.
