The unnamed 17-years-old was discovered at 3.10pm yesterday in the Huddersfield Narrow Canal near to a Tesco superstore in Stalybridge.
Officers arrived and the teenager was taken to Tameside General Hospital in a critical condition but died this morning.
According to officers, he was seen outside a Coral bookmakers on Grosvenor Street at 2.50pm but just 20 minutes later was seen in the canal.
Police are treating the boy’s death as unexplained and are appealing for witnesses and any information that may establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
He is described as being mixed-raced, wearing a dark grey gilet with blue hood, dark grey hooded top, grey jogging bottoms, black trainers.
“I would like to speak to anyone who thinks they may recognise the description of the boy and believes they saw him between these two times to contact us,” Detective Chief Inspector John Mazzolai said.
“It is important we establish what has happened and how he ended up in the canal. It is too early to say whether he has got in himself or someone else has been responsible.”
