Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A teenager who made more than 750 hoax 999 calls in just two days over Christmas has been warned she faces jail.
Kerry Ann Moate, 18, notched up 756 malicious calls on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, having previously made 44 from 11 to 13 December. She was arrested at her home in Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire, in the early hours of Tuesday after police traced her phone.
At Huntingdon magistrates' court yesterday, she admitted two charges of persistently making use of public communication networks to cause annoyance, inconvenience or anxiety. Police were so concerned about the impact, that her actions were classified as a danger to the public.
Superintendent Paul Fullwood, of Cambridgeshire Police, said: "The sheer volume of malicious calls was extremely disruptive to the force at a time of year that is always busy for police. Every time someone misuses the 999 they are potentially putting others' lives at risk."
Moate is to be sentenced in February.
