Malala Yousufzai, the schoolgirl who was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in Pakistan, has undergone successful surgery, doctors have said.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham confirmed that Malala, 15, underwent cranial reconstruction and received a cochlear implant on Saturday.

A spokeswoman said the medical team were "very pleased" with her progress following the five-hour operations. Malala required a custom-made titanium plate to repair her skull, while the cochlear implant will help her recover hearing in her left ear.

She has been receiving treatment at the hospital since she was flown to Britain in October last year after being shot in north-west Pakistan for promoting women's rights.
