Suffolk mayor Terry Buckle is recovering after accidentally driving his car into a branch of Tesco Express.
Shoppers watched in amazement as Mr Buckle, mayor of St Edmundsbury, drove his silver Vauxhall Vectra through the doors of the supermarket in Lawson Place, Bury St Edmunds, yesterday.
He was taken to West Suffolk Hospital suffering from minor injuries and shock but was later released.
Suffolk Police said noone was injured and no serious damage was caused.
Mr Buckle's wife Pam told the East Anglian Daily Times: "I had a phone call from the police, who were the first ones at the accident. I went there and went with him in the ambulance.
"He's home now. He's fine and he had an x-ray on his neck and he's just a bit sore. He's gone to bed with some tablets."
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said: "We were called at 4.35pm to a report that a silver Vauxhall Vectra had driven into the front of a Tesco Express on Lawson Place, Bury St Edmunds.
"The male driver was not injured."
The East of England Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.38pm yesterday to a man in his 70s who had no obvious injuries, he was just in shock. He was taken to West Suffolk general as a precaution."
