At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Yesterday a pedestrian was killed as Storm Desmond unleashed 90mph winds upon Britain.
Hundreds of people have been made homeless and thousands more left without power by Storm Desmond, which is thought to have broken the rainfall record set in 2009.
There are currently 47 severe flood warnings in place for Kendal, Keswick, Cockermouth, Carlisle and Appleby.
