At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. The flat in Hinckley, Leicestershire was owed by Anthony Alleyne, 62, an interior designer who was imprisoned in 2013 after he was found to be in possession of more than 5,000 child sex abuse images.
His estranged wife received the flat as part of a divorce settlement and has now put it on the market, valued at £70,000.
The flat is modeled on the inside of Star Trek's USS Voyager. Its write-up on Right Move encourages potential buyers to "step in to the Voyager and let your imagination do the rest".
An article on the BBC website notes, however, that buyers will be unable to get a mortgage on the flat as it has no cooker in the kitchen and the windows are obstructed.
Alleyne spent thousands of hours converting the flat. He attempted to sell it in 2003 for £1.25 million, but was unable to find a buyer.
