Police have released sketches of 20 unidentified people found dead on Britain's rail network over the past 35 years in an attempt to trace them.

Here are details of the cases:

* A woman was struck by a train at Victoria Tube station, in London, on January 13 1975. She was white, 25 to 30 years old, about 5ft 5ins, with short dark brown hair and a wart on her left cheek. She was wearing an orange three-quarter-length coat, a green jumper, black trousers and black shoes.

* A man was struck by a train at Mile End Tube station, east London, on May 8 1975. He was white, 45 to 50 years old, about 6ft, with black, receding hair and false teeth. He was wearing a navy blue blazer with yellow metal embossed buttons, a light blue shirt, blue trousers and black leather shoes.

* A man was struck by a train at Arsenal Tube station, north London, on April 20 1976. He was white, 40 to 45 years old, about 5ft 7ins, with light brown receding hair. Apart from his lower front teeth, his teeth were false and he was wearing a green check Harris tweed-type jacket.

* A man was struck by a train at Upton Park Tube station, east London, on March 20 1979. He was black, 30 to 40 years old, about 5ft 8ins with black greying hair. He was wearing a brown leather bomber jacket and a blue jumper with a "Rolls Royce" motif.

* A woman was struck by a train at Enfield Lock station, north London, on May 1 1981. She was white, around 50 years old, about 5ft 4ins, with grey shoulder-length hair. She was wearing a brown overcoat, red jumper, black dress, brown ankle length boots and a black headscarf with light blue flowers.

* A man was struck by a train at Embankment Tube station, central London, on August 21 1982. He was 45 to 50 years old, about 5ft 9ins with brown receding hair and false upper teeth. He was wearing a brown jacket and light brown trousers.

* A man was struck by a train at Southall station, London, on June 8 1983. He was of south Asian appearance, 35 to 40 years old, about 5ft 8ins with black collar length hair. He was wearing a beige windcheater jacket, a red and white pullover, blue jumper, grey striped shirt and brown checked trousers.

* A man was struck by a train at Westbourne Park Tube station, west London, on October 6 1983. He was of south Asian appearance, 40 to 50 years old, about 5ft 5ins with black receding hair. He was wearing a beige suit jacket, grey jumper, beige suit trousers, red and white striped shirt, and burgundy slip-on shoes.

* A man died of a heart attack at Euston station, north London, January 22 1989. He was white, about 55 years old, about 5ft 7ins with black receding hair. A tattoo on his lower left arm was of two clasped hands shaking under a union jack with the word "liberty" underneath.

* A man was found hanged from a tree at Ouse Valley railway viaduct, Sussex, on July 26 1991. He was white, 19 to 25 years old, about 5ft 9ins with dark brown curly hair. He was wearing a red and black jacket, a denim jacket, mauve polo neck jumper, grey shirt, blue jeans and brown suede walking shoes. He may have spoken with a French accent.

* A man was struck by a train at Earlsdon Bridge, Coventry, October 30 1993. He was white, 25 to 35 years old, about 5ft 8ins with short brown hair. He was wearing a light blue short sleeved polo neck shirt, blue jeans and white trainers.

* A man was struck by a train at St Albans, Hertfordshire, August 2 1995. He was white, about 30 years old, about 5ft 7ins with brown collar length hair. He was wearing a blue T-shirt, grey trousers, and brown boots and had a tattoo on his right forearm featuring two swallows holding a banner with the words "Marie" and possibly "Ena".

* A man was struck by a train at Erith, south east London, on December 15 1998. He was white, 40 to 50 years old, about 5ft 6ins with black hair. He was wearing a blue shirt, grey trousers and black shoes, and had false teeth.

* A man was struck by a train at Barking, east London, on March 29 1999. He was white, 50 to 70 years old, about 5ft 6ins with brown hair. He was wearing a black anorak, black trousers and blue jeans, a black jumper and black shoes. He had no teeth.

* A man was found dead from hypothermia beside track in Southend, Essex on November 15 2000. He was black, about 5ft 8ins with receding black hair and a grey beard. He was wearing a green jacket, brown trousers and white Tommy Hilfiger trainers. He may have been an itinerant with links to Waterloo.

* A man was struck by a train at Harpenden, Hertfordshire, on August 19 2004. He was white, 25 to 35 years old with a shaven head. He was wearing a green camouflage sleeveless shirt, black jeans and black trainers.

* A man was struck by a train at Leyton Midland Road station, east London, on November 8 2004. He was white, 30 to 40 years old, about 5ft 8ins with short dark brown hair. He was wearing a blue Nike jacket, grey shirt, blue jeans and black shoes.

* A man found dead in a hut at Cricklewood sidings, London, on January 31 2008. He was white, about 75 years old, about 4ft 10ins with white receding hair and a beard. He was wearing a black jumper with a grey circle on it, a red "Marylebone School" jumper, an orange sweatshirt, green t-shirt and white tracksuit bottoms. His first name may have been Dave.

* A man was struck by a train on August 15 2009, near the now disused station at Marazion, Cornwall. He was white, 30 to 45 years old, about 5ft 8ins, thin to medium build with grey hair and blue-green eyes. He was wearing a black leather motorcycle jacket, black Belstaff motorcycle gloves and three tops. He carried a small rucksack containing a Duracell torch, a Casio LCD portable TV/radio, sunglasses, a wallet containing an old pound note and an unwritten postcard of New York.

* A man was struck by a train under a road bridge on December 15 2009, near Plumstead station, south east London. He was white, in his mid-50s, 5ft 2ins to 5ft 6ins with dark, curly, collar length hair. He was wearing a black shiny bomber jacket, blue jeans, black trainers and a black and white striped scarf.
