Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It has been reported that the first the woman knew about the alleged attack was when police arrived at her home in Leicester to tell her they were investigating. The police and Leicester hospitals NHS trust would not comment yesterday on the details of the case, but Leicestershire Constabulary said that a 39-year-old man had been arrested, while a hospital spokeswoman said that a member of staff had been dismissed. It is also claimed that the alleged assault was recorded on the attacker's mobile phone and that the video may have been posted on the internet. The 31-year-old woman was reportedly admitted to Leicester Royal Infirmary earlier this year. A University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust spokeswoman said: "We are helping police with their inquiries and can therefore say very little for now. We can confirm that a member of staff has been dismissed." She said that the employee initially was suspended immediately when the police told the hospital of the allegations. A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Constabulary said: "We cannot confirm who we are investigating until such time as they are charged or due to appear in court. "A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and released on police bail pending further inquiries."
