From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A seven-year-old girl was killed today and a woman is fighting for her life after a two-car collision, police said.

A Peugeot, carrying the girl and driven by the woman, collided with a silver Mercedes on the A465 in South Wales at 11am.

Two women travelling in the Mercedes suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened on an eastbound section of what is known as the Heads of the Valleys road, between Brynmawr and Gilwern.

All four people involved in the accident were taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.

"The vehicles involved were a blue Peugeot carrying a female adult and child and a silver Mercedes carrying two females," a Gwent Police spokesman said.

"All occupants were conveyed to Nevill Hall Hospital.

"The seven-year-old girl travelling in the Peugeot sustained life-threatening injuries and has since been pronounced deceased.

"The female adult in the same vehicle sustained serious head injuries and currently remains in a life-threatening condition.

"The two occupants of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries."

He said the road was closed in both directions between Gilwern and the Conoco roundabout while emergency services were in attendance.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Gwent Police's collision investigation unit on 01633 642404.
