Three people were hospitalised following a fire at the Tata Steel site in Scunthorpe.

A small fire broke out at 2am at the company's plant in Scunthorpe. Three casualties were taken to Scunthorpe Hospital with "radiated burns" but have since been discharged.

The incident was initially reported as an explosion in the wind turbine, but Tata Steel have since confirmed the fire was located in their central station inside the power plant.

Six engines were called the attend the scene which is now under control. BBC Radio Humberside said on Twitter fire crews have now left the scene.

All people at the site have been accounted for.

A Tata Steel spokesman said: “We had a fire in the power station at our Scunthorpe plant at 2am today which led to three employees being hurt, all of whom have now been released from hospital. Our on-site emergency fire and rescue services arrived at the incident two minutes after the alarm was raised ensuring that the fire was dealt with quickly, restoring safety and ensuring that those affected were treated with the utmost speed, care and professionalism.

“As is established practice in these circumstances, a full investigation has been launched to establish the causes of today’s incident. Steel production was not affected by the fire.”
