Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

An 11-year-old girl who fell down a stairwell at school has died in hospital, it was confirmed today.

Elle Hiscott was taken to hospital on Wednesday last week after the accident at Raine's Foundation School in Bethnal Green, east London.

She died in intensive care at Great Ormond Street Hospital yesterday.

A spokesman for the hospital said: "We can confirm Elle Hiscott sadly died at the hospital yesterday, and we offer our sincere condolences to her family.

"Elle's family would like to thank all the clinical staff who were involved in her care and have requested absolute privacy at this very difficult time."

The Health and Safety Executive was called in after Elle fell two floors down a spiral staircase at the Church of England secondary school.

But the investigation concluded the school had "no case to answer", according to Tower Hamlets Council.

A spokesman for the council said today: "We are sad to confirm the death of a pupil from Raine's Foundation School in Bethnal Green who passed away yesterday at Great Ormond Street Hospital following a fall at the school on October 13.

"We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and our thoughts and sympathies are with them at this most difficult time.

"Whilst we are not able to give out any more information at this stage, we will continue to work closely with the family and school to provide all possible support."

Elle was taken by ambulance to the Royal London Hospital in a "serious" condition before being moved to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
