From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A second earthquake in two days has struck the UK. The earthquake, measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale, hit the East Midlands village of Cottesmore, in Rutland, at 10.25pm on Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake was felt in homes across Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire. There are no reports of any damage to property so far.

It came after an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 was recorded in Winchester on Tuesday night.

People from around the Midlands immediately took to Twitter and Facebook to express their surprise.

Rae Earl, author of My Mad Fat Diary tweeted: “An earthquake in the Linc/Cambs area. Right who has been doing some amateur fracking?”

The unexpected quake left some residents shaken – Charley Rawling, from Northamptonshire commented: “That earthquake has scared me weirdly.”

But for many, the earth failed to move, with dozens of people remarking that they had not felt even the faintest tremor. “Seems our town has just been hit by a earthquake of 3.8 magnitude - never felt it”, tweeted Sam Clark of Leeds.
