Rochdale bus crash: roof ripped off after double-decker smashes into railway bridge injuring "many"

The roof of a double-decker bus has been ripped off after it ploughed into a railway bridge, injuring "many" of its 25 passengers.

Two people, a man and a woman, suffered serious facial injuries following the crash, in the centre of Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

Large numbers of "walking wounded" could be seen fleeing the bus after the smash on Milkstone Road, police said.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said that "many" of the 25 passengers on board were injured, though none is thought to be a life-threatening condition.

Emergency services were called to the crash, near the town's main railway station, shortly before 12.30pm on Tuesday.

North West Ambulance Service said it sent 12 vehicles, including cars and ambulances to the scene.
