The display team will fly over UK to mark 75th anniversary
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Red Arrows will take to the skies to perform a UK-wide flypast for the first time in eight years to mark the 75th anniversary of VJ Day on Saturday.
Flying the distinctively scarlet Hawk fast-jets, the royal air force aerobatic team will soar over Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and London in an aerial tribute to commemorate the day Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces on 15 August 1945, signalling the end of the Second World War.
The Red Arrows will pass over Edinburgh at 11.30am, Belfast at 2pm, Cardiff at 2.45pm and London at 5.30pm.
The flight path will include the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of the Chelsea Pensioners in London, where three recipients of the Burma Star live in retirement. They will gather outside to watch as the display roars over.
Three Scottish Second World War veterans will meet the pilots during a refuelling stop at Prestwick Airport at 12 noon, and a Welsh veteran will meet them at Cardiff Airport at 3.15pm.
The VJ Day Red Arrow display will be the first such flypast since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
