She tripped at Clarence House, her London home, on Friday afternoon. A member of staff found her and doctors who saw her at home put her left arm in a sling.
The Queen Mother, who celebrated her 100th birthday in August, spoke to the Prince of Wales by telephone yesterday. The Prince, who visited his grandmother from Highgrove, in Gloucestershire, said she was "in remarkably good form".
The Queen Mother's private secretary, Sir Alastair Aird, said: "She tripped over the edge of the carpet as she was walking into her sitting room. There was no one near by, but the page on duty found [her] very soon after she fell - probably in under a minute. She had to be helped, and the sister and doctor were called."
The fall comes after the Queen Mother, who has had two hip operations, tripped and stumbled last Tuesday evening while getting into her car. She tripped on her evening gown after attending a Garden Society annual dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in London.
She has cancelled a visit to the Field of Remembrance at St Margaret's Churchyard, Westminster, on Thursday, ahead of Sunday's Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph, Whitehall.
A Clarence House spokeswoman said that if someone had been with her at the time of accident, they probably could have stopped the fall. But, she added: "Her Majesty has a life of her own and is not kept under constant watch. Everybody is aware that she is 100 years old and they keep things out of her way."
Members of the Royal Family will visit the Queen Mother at Clarence House, close to Buckingham Palace.
* Dame Vera Lynn, 83, who sang for the British forces, has broken hip in a fall at her home in Ditchling, Sussex. A spokesperson at The Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath said that her condition was satisfactory.
