Pub closures soar amid high taxation and cheap supermarket deals

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.High taxes and cheap supermarket deals mean 18 pubs are closing every week, a report by campaigners has claimed.
Earlier this year, the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) said the rate of closure had reached 12 a week, but the toll has now soared. A total of 450 pubs across the UK have closed their doors since March.
More than 100,000 people have signed a petition against the beer duty escalator, which means tax is automatically increased by two per cent above inflation. This triggered a debate among MPs, which will take place today.
Camra chief executive Mike Benner said: “With pubs finding it ever harder to maintain consistent footfall at a time when prices are ever increasing, it is only hoped that Parliament will today take the first steps by voting to review punitive taxation policies on Britain's national drink.”
