With unionists threatening to pull down the power-sharing executive over claims of ongoing IRA activity, a senior police officer said the group was responsible for shooting bus driver Danny McBrearty in both legs on Sunday.
Assistant Chief Constable Sam Kinkaid said an initial investigation had revealed the Provisionals "were responsible for the shooting of Mr McBrearty". His revelation sparked a warning from Ulster Unionist MP Jeffrey Donaldson that his party could be forced to expel Sinn Fein from the executive before its 18 January deadline for republicans to prove their commitment to peace.
Mr McBrearty was driving a bus carrying pensioners from a day trip to Co Donegal in the Irish Republic which was stopped by a masked gang.
