From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A policeman has been mocked by colleagues after appearing to accidentally prosecute himself for having an untaxed vehicle.

West Yorkshire Police said he received the penalty notice after filling out a form incorrectly, “to the amusement of the rest of the office”.

The officer apparently put his own name on the paperwork instead of the actual offender.

A letter from the DVLA, which was sent to a police station in Bradford, demanded the officer pay £81 by 1 April or be taken to court.

It said the offence related to an untaxed vehicle found in Oak Street, Bradford, on 15 February.

“To the great amusement of the rest of the office, one of our colleagues managed to fill a form in incorrectly, and prosecuted himself for driving an untaxed vehicle!” the force’s Roads Policing Unit wrote on Twitter.

But the officer, whose identity has not been revealed, later pleaded “not guilty” to the mistake, according to the policing unit.

“[He] is blaming an admin error at @DVLAgovuk. Enquiries are on going…” it said.
