The de Havilland DH 43 crashed at the back of an airfield at a military pageant at Old Warden Aerodrome, near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.
The pilot, said to be in his forties, was taken to hospital but later died. Organisers cancelled the show, which was attended by more than 600 people. The airfield is home to the Shuttleworth Collection of vintage aircraft.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said: "Inspectors have been despatched to start an investigation which will determine the circumstances behind the accident."
