Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Piers Morgan has branded Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani “completely mad” for defending an inflammatory tweet the US president sent amid the George Floyd protests.

Appearing on Thursday morning’s Good Morning Britain show, Giuliani was quizzed about his defence of the tweet which read: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

In a heated exchange on the breakfast programme, Giuliani first hit out at Morgan’s co-host Susanna Reid, accusing her and GMB of lying about the tweet and its perceived racist undertones.

Giuliani then quickly turned fire on Morgan, saying that the broadcaster should have backed him up as he “knew Trump wasn’t racist” before calling him a “disgrace” and a “liar”.

In a scathing rebuke, Morgan then branded Giuliani “mad” and “unhinged” over his “abusive” comments.

The interview then descended into a shouting match between the two men in which Giuliani accused Morgan of being a “failed” journalist.

Morgan said of Giuliani: “You’ve gone completely mad and abusive and it’s really sad what has happened to you.”

Trump’s lawyer became increasingly frustrated after he was interrupted by Morgan several times.

“I’m up here at 1am. I think you’d give me the courtesy to answer,” said Giuliani.

“I know you don’t like my answers but you’d think you’d give me the courtesy of answering them.”

Giuliani then continued to criticise both GMB hosts for “misinterpreting” what Trump’s tweet apparently meant, suggesting they were “lying” with their coverage.

Giuliani claimed the pair’s comments about Trump’s tweet were “garbage”, adding that he had “no respect” for Morgan.

“No one wants to listen to you Piers, I have no respect for you,” he said before the interview was ended.

Morgan had previously been supportive of Trump when he first entered office although he has become increasingly critical of the president in recent months.
