A man has died after getting into difficulty while paddleboarding in Cornwall.

The coastguard received several 999 calls at 1.38pm on Monday about a person in the water at rock.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the 42-year-old had been paddleboarding with friends in the estuary between Padstow and Rock.

A force spokesman said the man, believed to have been on holiday in the area, was brought ashore by a fellow paddleboarder.

"Sadly, despite CPR being attempted, he was pronounced deceased at the scene," he said. "The man's next-of-kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

The incident was attended by an RNLI lifeboat from Rock, a coastguard rescue team from Polzeath and a Padstow Harbour patrol vessel, as well as South Western Ambulance Service and the police.

James Instance, coastguard controller at Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre, said: "This was a major multi-agency operation involving a couple of paddleboarders in difficulties in fast moving water on a flooding tide on the Camel Estuary.

"Sadly it was not the outcome we desired and our thoughts are with the man's family at this difficult time."
