A spokeswoman for British Transport Police told The Independent they were called to the station at 11.07am and said specialist officers are examining the "item".
Metropolitan Police officers are assisting the British Transport Police, a spokesman said.
A controlled detonation was used "to ensure the item was safe".
Metropolitan police and British Transport Police are investigating.
Jubilee Line trains are being held, causing delays on the line.
Commuters have been asked to avoid the area.
The O2 has not been evacuated, but those waiting to climb the dome have been told their climbs will be rescheduled.
Police are asking anyone who saw anything suspicoius on the eastbound train to call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789321.
