At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The fire started in the house, which is undergoing refurbishment, in Totteridge Lane, Whetstone, around 4.30pm.
The whole of the house's roof and the first floor were alight, according to a statement from the London Fire Brigade.
Totteridge Lane, has been closed to vehicles because of the fire. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
The fire is now under control.
Steve Dudeney, the Brigade's Borough Commander for Hackney, who was at the scene, said:
"Firefighters are working hard to contain the fire and are tackling it from all sides of the property as well as from above using an aerial ladder platform."
There are no reports of injuries. The Fire Brigade say the cause of the fire is not currently known.
