From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. If you’re ready to venture out yet on New Year’s Day, there’s a good chance you could make the journey to stock up at the local supermarket only to find it is shut.
With most businesses operating reduced hours on the first day of 2016, here’s a quick rundown of where will be open – and how to find out more about specific stores near you.
Tesco
Tesco says its store hours will vary across the country over the holiday period, though most larger shops should be open. Times will vary from between 8am or 9am and 6pm, and 10am to 4pm.
Busier Express stores will run longer hours, up to 10pm in places, but you can check for your local shop here.
Sainsbury’s
Smaller Sainsbury’s Local outlets will generally be shaving a couple of hours off their opening times, serving customers from 9am to 9pm.
Larger stores are likely to shut earlier, around 6pm – but that’s still better than most Sunday hours.
Check their store locator here.
Morrisons
Morrisons said most of its stores will be opening an hour later on New Year’s Day, and shutting at 7pm. Petrol station shops will be opening an extra half-hour longer either side of that.

Aldi
Aldi says all its outlets will be closed on New Year’s Day. Sorry about that.
Asda
Asda stores will be operating significantly reduced opening times, with larger 7-11 stores cutting down to 10am to 6pm.
See more on their website here.
Lidl
Like Aldi, Lidl stores will be staying closed over the whole of New Year’s Day, according to the retailer’s website. It is worth double checking your local though, here.
Waitrose
Busier inner-city branches of Waitrose will largely be open on New Year’s Day, though at later times around noon to 8pm.
Larger stores around the country are likely to be shut – so check your local here.
