A woman has died and two other pedestrians have been injured after being hit by a bus in Manchester.

The double decker bus crashed into pedestrians at a bus stop in the Piccadilly area of the city centre, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said.

One woman in her 50s died and another woman, also in her 50s, is in hospital with serious injuries following the collision. A man in his 60s received treatment for minor injuries.

“I just saw the bus suddenly mount the kerb and crash into the bus stop,” an eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News. “There were hundreds of people standing around trying to help. The police were here within minutes.”

Another bystander who posted a video of police, ambulance and fire crews at the scene, reported hearing a “bang” around the time of the incident.

The bus driver remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries, the police spokesman said.

A Stagecoach Manchester spokesman added: “We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in a serious incident at a bus shelter at Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester around 9.30pm on Sunday evening.

“Our first thoughts are for those affected by the incident and their families. Safety is our absolute priority and we are supporting the investigation into the circumstances involved in any way that we can.”

Officers are appealing for anyone with dash or helmet-cam footage of the collision, or the area in the minutes before the crash, to get in touch.

Anyone with information should contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
