As many as 100 school children have been involved in a mass brawl in Manchester city centre.

The fracas comes one day after similar reports of a fight involving “100 school children” led to seven arrests in south east London.

The brawl in Manchester occurred in the city’s Northern Quarter district on Tuesday night.

Police received several calls to reports of “100 school children” aged 13 to 17 involved in the large scale fight in Dale Street at about 7.30pm.

Many of those involved were seen wearing blazers, though it is not yet known which school they go to.

By the time police arrived at the scene, the children had fled.

Inspector Phil Spurgeon told the Manchester Evening News that no arrests had yet been made.

He said: "We received a number of calls about the incident yesterday evening, which has clearly caused residents of the area and passers-by a great deal of concern and distress.

“We are in the very early stages of the investigation but we believe there could be anything between 30 and 100 young people involved.

”Violence will not be tolerated on the street of Greater Manchester and we will be looking to reprimand the senseless individuals who have caused this chaos.”

At the time, Greater Manchester Police tweeted: “Several 999s to large groups of youths fighting Piccadilly/NQ border.

“Numerous officers deployed, most of youths have run off on our arrival.”

The fight comes just one day after riot police were called to a huge fight in Bexley, south east London, in which school children used table legs and concrete blocks in the brawl. Seven people have been arrested and two teenagers aged 15 and 19 were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fight in Manchester also comes 10 days after another mass brawl in the city’s Northern Quarter, following a Manchester football derby, when City beat United 2 – 1.
