Footage of the incident shows a white passenger threatening a man and woman as he gestures aggressively during a 10-minute tirade.
He can be heard yelling “I’ll f***ing destroy you, you c***“ during the confrontation as other commuters attempt to calm him down.
The video ends with him shouting “f*** you, you Chinese c***.“
A witness told Bristol Live bystanders reacted with horror and several people moved from the carriage to escape the commotion.
”There were a couple of people telling him to be quiet and there was no place for racism in this country,” they said. “There were kids who were scared, it was not very nice at all.”
The incident was filmed by a fellow commuter and took place on the 5pm Great Western Railway from London Paddington to Temple Meads on Wednesday.
British Transport Police (BTP) is now urging witnesses to come forward.
“BTP are aware of a video posted on social media last night showing a man being racially abusive to passengers on a Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads service,” a spokesperson told The Independent on Thursday.
“Officers are currently investigating the incident and would ask anyone who witnessed the abuse, or the events leading up to it, to contact them.”
The video drew widespread condemnation after being circulated on social media. Great Western Railway said the behaviour exhibited in the clip was “not acceptable” and vowed to support the BTP in its investigation.
The incident comes weeks after a woman was punched on a London Underground train for speaking Spanish.
A 56-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated actual bodily harm (ABH) in that case, according to the British Transport Police.
