The 57-year-old, who has not yet been named, became unwell after being detained at 4.30am on Sunday morning, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.
He was taken to a hospital in the town but died at 6.50am.
An investigation has now been launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Amanda Rowe, regional director of the IOPC, said: “Our sympathies are with the man’s family and all those affected by his death.
“We have met with family members to explain our role and we will keep them regularly updated.
“Our investigation is obviously at a very early stage and we will be carrying a thorough investigation into all the circumstances.”
Talking about the incident itself, Chief Superintendent Wayne Miller, of GMP, said officers were called to a property in Argyll Road, in Cheadle, following reports of a disturbance.
He said: “Local officers swiftly responded to the incident and arrested a man.
“On arrival at Cheadle police station, the man became unwell and he was taken to hospital but he was sadly pronounced dead. Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this devastating time.
“We have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who are independently investigating and we will continue to co-operate with them fully.”
Regional IOPC director Amanda Rowe said “a thorough investigation into all the circumstances” would be carried out.
