Two people have reportedly died in a crash on the M1 after a car drove the wrong way down the motorway.

Police are investigating reports of a car travelling the wrong way down the M1 before the incident.

The accident involved a blue Mazda Premacy and a white Ford transit van and took place near to junction 24 in Leicestershire in the early hours of Monday.

The 87-year-old male driver of the van and a 27-year-old male passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Leicestershire Police said it had received reports of a car travelling the wrong way down the southbound carriageway of the M1 prior to the collision. The road has been closed.

Anyone who has information about the incident or saw either vehicle prior to the collision is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident 23 of October 12 2015.
