Cyclists were also more likely to die in those incidents than in any other type.
Researchers studied the cases brought into the Royal London Hospital over six years. A team from Queen Mary, University of London, Royal London Hospital's Trauma Clinical Academic Unit and the London Helicopter Emergency Medical Service found 21 per cent involved in crashes with HGVs died, compared with 6 per cent who were hit by cars.
