From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Commuters in London are bracing themselves for travel chaos today, as bus workers stage the first of three 24-hour strikes over differing rates of pay. These are the latest updates:

  • Transport for London (TfL) said almost half of the buses which normally operate in the morning were running.

  • Unite has called TfL's statement on services "wildly optimistic".

  • Further strikes are expected to talk place on 13 and 15 February.

  • The bus companies likely to be affected are: Abellio (Abellio London and Abellio West London);
    Arriva (Arriva North and Arriva South); CT Plus (Hackney Community Transport); Go Ahead (Blue Triangle, Docklands, London General, London Central, Metrobus); London Sovereign; London United; Metroline (Metroline and Metroline West); Stagecoach (East London Bus & Coach Company, Selkent); Tower Transit

  • TfL has released an afternoon update of which services are not running today. Check the live blog below for a list.

  • TfL Director of Buses claims 'leveling up' pay would cost around £100million a year and "and would result in a cut to bus services, an increase in fares, or both."

  • The bus routes affected by today's action.
