From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A security guard has pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm after a one-year-old boy was shot in the head with an air rifle in Bristol.

Jordan Walters, 24, appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court alongside his 23-year-old fiancee, Emma Jane Horseman.

Harry Studley remains in a critical condition after suffering a serious head injury from an air-gun pellet on Friday evening.

The couple, from Bishport Avenue in Bristol, have both been charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

A police spokesman said: 'Harry Studley remains in a critical condition in Bristol Children's Hospital with a serious head injury after being shot by a pellet discharged from an air weapon."

'We've now charged two people in relation to the incident."

"They have been remanded in custody ahead of their appearance before magistrates."

Emergency crews were called to a flat in Bishport Avenue, Hartcliffe, at 4.10pm on Friday, after neighbours reported hearing a child "screaming and screaming".

Police said the boy's family, including parents Amy Allen and Edward Studley, were continuing to be given "all the help and support they need".

In a statement on Sunday, the parents said: “We very much appreciate the help and support of our family, friends and local community at this very difficult time.”
