Salary: an average of pounds 18,000. ITV news camera operator pounds 15,056- pounds 25,819 .

Average age: late twenties

Perks: Meal allowance for working away from base; pounds 6 for lunch.

Hours: BBC - basic working week of 40 hours up to a maximum of 60 hours. Recent record was a 32-hour day for coverage of the opening of the Channel Tunnel.

ITV - hours vary between companies. ITN technicians work 208 shifts per year with an average 12-hour shift.
